download nero clean tool to get rid of all installed versions, reboot, **IMPORTANT** disable any antivirus software you have running. Re-install nero 8. If this doesnt work, check the sources where you got the program, if you downloaded it, from an ''ahem cough cough filesharing'' site, the download may be corrupt.
Also check for visual c++ updates, runtime errors can happen if you have an older version.
Food for thought tho, I tried to install nero essentials oem, free with new dvd burner, I tried it over a dozen times with various errors, turned of antivirus, and bob was my mothers brother...........

Have just installed nero 8 and smartstart wont work comes up with visual c++ runtime error can anyone help?
I have had the same problem with the same downloading ( ahem cough cough wink wink nudge nudge) All i did was uninstall/reinstall and voilla working ok again! But make sure antivirus software is disabled!!!!
